I just happened across this really neat tutorial on scratchbuilding your first structure. Check it out here. Unfortunately, the tutorial was never completed…

Yard Module Plan Updated – Version 4a, originally uploaded by gerenm.
I’ve made some further enhancement to the Yard Module, which I’ve also
decided will be built ahead of the switching module. In this version, I’ve
returned to the 80-1/4″ module length, but have managed to move the
turntable onto the module, as opposed to having the turntable live on it’s
own “mini-module.” In this scenario, I only have to have one turntable for
both modular and home use.

On30 Yard Design — Version 2, originally uploaded by gerenm.
An updated version of my On30 Yard Modules. This adds a turntable to the
yard that, unfortunately, will not be able to be used on the home layout.
Ah, well….

On30Yard1, originally uploaded by gerenm.
And, here’s the yard. As with the other module, this will also serve on my home layout. I do not have the necessary supplies to build this yet — I’m waiting to see how far along I get on the other one first.
The prototype for this yard was in Lake Placid, NY. I’ve added only one track (the first little spur at the upper right) to act as a switcher pocket. Also, due to space restrictions, I’ve had to eliminate the turntable. Instead, the two tracks at the lower right serce as the engine facility. The track by itself at the top of the plan is the passenger station track/freight departure track.
This should be a ton-o-fun to operate!
I can’t wait!
